CBE Distinguished Professor Alexander V. Neimark is the winner of the prestigious Leverhulme Trust Award given to eminent foreign academics for Visiting Professorship at UK universities. The Leverhulme award will support sabbatical research of Dr. Neimark at the University College London in Fall 2018.

The inaugural CBE Industry Meet and Greet, held Tuesday evening, November 14, 2017, in the Busch Student Center, was a tremendous success! Alumni and others representing nearly 20 industry partners fielded questions and shared advice/insights with more than 150 CBE undergraduate and graduate students. A US Patent (Patent No.: 9,765,196) entitled "Inorganic Ionomers Made from Minerals” was recently issued to Dr. Hara and a collaborator, Dr. Lehman. The invention is on the development of inorganic polymers, which have various advantages over organic counterparts including abundance of source material, non-flammability, low toxicity, and excellent thermal and chemical resistance.

The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering is pleased to announce that each of the department’s assistant professors has been recognized by the National Science Foundation with 2017 funding. The department has extensive research expertise in areas that include advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing, energy and biofuels, process systems and reaction engineering, complex fluids and nanostructured materials, biotechnology, and bioengineering.

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) has announced that Christine B. Seymour, PhD, Director at Pfizer, Inc., will become President of AIChE in 2018. Seymour succeeds 2017 President T. Bond Calloway, Jr., Associate Laboratory Director at the Savannah River National Laboratory. Kimberly Ogden, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Arizona, will become 2018 President-elect, and will succeed Seymour as AIChE President in 2019. Prof. Shishir Chundawat and Rutgers rising senior (Mr. Benjamin Esposito from Rutgers CBE Graduating Class of 2018) organized and led an enzyme engineering/biofuels focussed workshop this summer with over 45 local New Jersey high school student participants. Students learned what it means to be a chemical/biochemical engineer and specifically focussed on a hands-on experiment where they measured the catalytic activity of cellulase enzymes hydrolyzing cellulosic biomass to facilitate biofuels production.
