BS/Master's Degree
Program Overview
Rutgers University-New Brunswick students can take advantage of our accelerated master’s program that allows undergraduate students complete a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or Pharmaceutical Engineering in as little as one additional semester beyond the undergraduate degree. Also known as a 4+1 program, the BS/Master's program is flexible for students participating full-time (9 credits per semester) or part-time (as few as one course per semester) while working full-time.
Students may apply to either the Master of Science (MS) in Chemical Engineering or the Master of Engineering (ME) in Pharmaceutical Engineering.
The BS/Master's program is now open for all undergraduate majors at Rutgers-NB. The Graduate Program in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering regularly welcomes students with diverse educational backgrounds into our department for advanced study. More information can be found here.
The BS/Master's Program offers:
- An expedited graduate applications process for highly qualified students
- Added depth of knowledge inherent in graduate course work
- Earning a bachelor's and master's degrees in a shortened timeframe
- A tailored graduate experience to fit students' interests and schedule
- An opportunity to count certain core undergraduate chemical engineering courses as electives for the Master's degree through credit transfers
- An opportunity to count graduate courses taken as an undergraduate student as credits towards the Master's degree through credit transfers
- A one-time $1,000 scholarship to students who enroll full-time in the first semester after completing their Rutgers-NB undergraduate degree
Admission Essentials
This program is only open to students receiving their BS degrees from Rutgers-New Brunswick. Non-CBE majors are welcome and should be in contact with the graduate program director for guidance.
- Online application form
- Brief (one page) personal statement outlining your professional goals, attached to the application form
- At least one recommendation letter, e-mailed to the graduate program director
- Send an e-mail to the Graduate Program Director indicating that your application has been submitted for faster response
- GRE is NOT required
- Application fee is waived
- Rutgers GPA of 3.0 or above
- Otherwise contact graduate program director for alternate admission through non-matriculated graduate study leading to the Master's degree
- Applications processed on a rolling basis within CBE for faster processing and no deadlines
- Fall applications can be processed up to mid-August in most cases
Please note that meeting these eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission. Students must maintain an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 to continue in the program.
