A US Patent (Patent No.: 9,985,296) entitled "Polymer-Derived Catalysts and Methods of Use Thereof" was recently issued to Professor Tewodros (Teddy) Asefa and his former PhD student, Dr. Rafael Silva. The patent is on novel synthetic methods involving self-assembly, polymerization and pyrolysis to convert polymer/silica nanocomposite materials, such as polyaniline/mesoporous silica, into nanoporous heteroatom-doped carbons and demonstration of the ability of the products to serve as efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for reactions on electrodes in fuel cells and water electrolyzers.

Prof. Chundawat is part of a Rutgers-led collaborative research team selected by the Department of Energy (as part of DOE’s Funding Opportunity Announcement in the area of ‘Bioimaging Research for Bioenergy’) to advance research in the development of biological systems for the production of biofuels and bioproducts. The title of the project is “In planta single-molecule imaging and holographic force spectroscopy to study real-time, multimodal turnover dynamics of polysaccharides and associated carbohydrate metabolites”.
