Rutgers School of Engineering professor Fernando Muzzio accepted the 2018 Chairman’s Award, presented as part of the Research & Development Council of New Jersey’s 39th annual Edison Patent Awards on November 1. Muzzio, a distinguished professor of chemical and biochemical engineering and director of the Center for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS), was recognized along with a cross-disciplinary team of researchers from major universities who are working to improve the way pharmaceutical and food products are manufactured.

The second floor lobby of Richard Weeks Hall of Engineering was teeming with industry partners, students, and faculty on Monday evening, November 12, for the second annual CBE Student-Industry Meet and Greet. Special thanks to all representatives for sharing their expertise in such diverse fields as pharmaceutical, energy, cosmetics, and oil/gas industries.

Teddy Asefa made it into the list of Highly Cited Researchers in the world in 2018: According to Clarivate Analytics, which is part of Thompson Reuters, this distinction derives from peers, who have acknowledged the influence of his research contributions in their publications and citations. He is now among an elite group recognized for exceptional research performance demonstrated by production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations in Web of Science.

A US Patent (Patent No.: 9,985,296) entitled "Polymer-Derived Catalysts and Methods of Use Thereof" was recently issued to Professor Tewodros (Teddy) Asefa and his former PhD student, Dr. Rafael Silva. The patent is on novel synthetic methods involving self-assembly, polymerization and pyrolysis to convert polymer/silica nanocomposite materials, such as polyaniline/mesoporous silica, into nanoporous heteroatom-doped carbons and demonstration of the ability of the products to serve as efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for reactions on electrodes in fuel cells and water electrolyzers.

Prof. Chundawat is part of a Rutgers-led collaborative research team selected by the Department of Energy (as part of DOE’s Funding Opportunity Announcement in the area of ‘Bioimaging Research for Bioenergy’) to advance research in the development of biological systems for the production of biofuels and bioproducts. The title of the project is “In planta single-molecule imaging and holographic force spectroscopy to study real-time, multimodal turnover dynamics of polysaccharides and associated carbohydrate metabolites”.
